Cab Calloway Orchestra Newark Concert reviews
Really Disappointing
Last year, we attended the 2026 xmas concert and it was a wonderful experience. It was my first time watching the Cab Calloway Orchestra, and they were amazing. Kirsti, despite having a broken ankle, displayed a lot of energy and joy on the stage. Their vocals were spot on as well.
This time, we decided to splurge on excellent seats close to the stage. However, we were disappointed as the sound was way off - too loud with too much bass, causing a lot of distortion and discomfort in my ears. The song set was almost the same as last year, but they added a few new songs that were out of tune (as a professional musician, they were OFF). Throughout the night, Kirsti appeared distracted, constantly adjusting her sound through her earpiece and tugging at her uncomfortable white pantsuit. It was difficult to hear her over the two bass singers.
The special sets and choreography were eliminated this year, replaced by a static performance on a set of stairs with screens displaying images. The opening act, the same as last year, were poorly received Victorian carolers, mostly ignored by the audience. The Cab Calloway Orchestra only took the stage at 8:15, performing two 30-minute sets with a long intermission, which felt insufficient considering the ticket prices.
It's unfortunate to see such talent misdirected by an agent pushing for larger venues with more production elements. The sound engineering was subpar, making it challenging to hear the vocal harmonies. Previous audience complaints regarding sound quality in other cities during the tour have gone unaddressed. Personally, I believe a return to smaller venues with simpler sound setups and a focus on the music would be more impactful. A reduction in distracting light shows and videos would also be beneficial. I will not be returning in the future, as this experience left me disappointed, especially on what was supposed to be a special date night with my husband, who shared my sentiments of being underwhelmed.
